Is the free plan enough?
If you use dictation the way it is meant to be used, no. Someone who talks to Claude Code, Cursor or ChatGPT for real dictates 5,000 to 10,000 words a day; the free plan is gone by Monday lunch. The free tier is a trial with a cap, which is a fair way to sell a cloud product that costs them money per word.
What you get for $15
Cloud recognition in 100+ languages, an app on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android with one synced dictionary, meeting notes on Mac, and an MCP connection to Claude and ChatGPT. It is a good product. It is also cloud-only: your voice and the text go to their servers, and the Windows app is a port of the Mac one that reviewers have found heavy.
The cheaper way, if you are on Windows
Holdkey runs the recognizer and the cleanup on your PC, so the free plan does not need a word cap: Raw mode is unlimited forever, and Clean mode is free for 30 dictations a day. Unlimited Clean is $8 a month, $69 a year, or $99 once for the first 150 founders. Nothing leaves your machine, and the text lands in under a second after you let go of the key (measured). The trade: Windows only, English first, no phone app.
