Voice input for Codex on Windows

Codex runs in a terminal or in its own app, and both take long, specific instructions. Holdkey gives you a single key that works in either, keeps your file names and flags verbatim, and lands the text before your hand is back on the keyboard.

The built-in mic

ChatGPT's voice feature works inside ChatGPT. Codex in a terminal has no mic at all. Holdkey is one key for both, and for the browser tab next to them.

Long messages

Long voice messages are exactly what gets lost in chat apps. Holdkey keeps every dictation in a local history and pastes it as text, so nothing disappears.

Terminal paste

Holdkey uses the right paste shortcut per window and never sends Enter. What you said is in the prompt, waiting for you.

Privacy

Recognition and cleanup run on your PC with open models. No account, no cloud, no screenshots.

How it goes with Codex

  1. Put the cursor in the Codex prompt.
  2. Hold Right Ctrl, say the whole thing, let go.
  3. Read the cleaned text, press Enter when it is right.

Measured, not claimed. About 100 ms from release to text on a 19-second prompt, measured through a real mic on a desktop CPU. Clean mode adds about half a second on very short clips and nothing on long ones. Method and numbers.

Holdkey is Windows-only and English-first today. It does not touch Codex itself; it only types where your cursor is.
