Voice input for Claude Code on Windows

Claude Code lives in a terminal, and terminals are where most dictation tools fall over: no text box to attach to, paste shortcuts that differ from every other app, and prompts that are long and full of file names. Holdkey was built by someone who talks to Claude Code most of the day, so the terminal is the first thing it had to get right.

Long prompts

A two-minute description of a bug is normal in Claude Code. Holdkey transcribes and cleans while you hold the key, so a 60-second prompt lands about 100 ms after you let go, not after a spinner.

File names and flags

In a terminal Holdkey keeps identifiers exactly as spoken and never expands or corrects them. Say the path, get the path.

Pasting into a terminal

Windows Terminal wants Ctrl+Shift+V; ConHost wants Ctrl+V. Holdkey picks the right one per window, and never presses Enter for you.

Losing a thought

There is no button to press and no window to focus, so the ramble you started while reading the diff is already text by the time you look up.

How it goes with Claude Code

  1. Put the cursor in the Claude Code prompt.
  2. Hold Right Ctrl and describe the change, the bug, the constraint, in the order it comes to you.
  3. Let go. The cleaned prompt is in the input. Read it, edit a word if you like, press Enter.
  4. Tap Right Ctrl right after if you want the verbatim version instead.

Measured, not claimed. Measured through a real webcam mic on the same machine: 98 to 112 ms from key release to text for a 19-second prompt, 0 to 1% word error on the fixture. Method and numbers.
